On 19 March 2026, amendments to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan ‘On Currency Regulation and Currency Control’ No. 167-VI ZRK dated 2 July 2018 will come into force.
What will change for individual customers?
From 19 March 2026:
- All citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan will be recognised as residents of the Republic of Kazakhstan, regardless of whether they have a residence permit in another country, i.e. the rules established for residents of the Republic of Kazakhstan will apply to your currency transactions.
- Until that date, citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan with a foreign residence permit are considered non-residents.
What will change for business customers?
From 19 March 2026:
- Branches and representative offices of foreign non-financial organisations operating in the Republic of Kazakhstan will also be recognised as residents.
- The exception is organisations for which non-resident status is established by international agreements of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Why is this important?
The changes are aimed at unifying the rules and do not imply a deterioration in banking services for customers. Resident or non-resident status affects the procedure for conducting certain currency transactions and reporting.
